Meet Brenna Miles, The Singer-Songwriter Behind B.Miles, and Her Upcoming Drop: In Order of Appearance

B.MILES.jpg

Brenna Miles is the heart (and lovely face) of the hypnotic New York-based music project, B.Miles. And she’s more than just an ethereal, yet salty voice—Brenna is an insanely talented songwriter, presence on any stage (including Bowery Ballroom, um hi!), and new mama to a lovable pitbull—among many other hustles. Originally from Pasadena, California, Brenna’s melodies exude sultry coastal vibes. B.Miles puts out the type of music that you, quite frankly, want to listen to… all the time. They are perfect for a day at the beach,

have the ability to soothe any stormy day, and are ideal for when you’re stuck working from home. There really is no way to describe their sound—it’s unique, yet comforting. Funky, yet relaxing. It crosses over from the East Coast to the West Coast, and then back again.

Our Brain Break team couldn’t wait to learn more about Brenna Miles, a true role model to all women who shoot for them STARS, baby. When life resumes, let’s all catch a show together.

Did you always know you wanted to pursue a career in music?

For as long as I can remember, music has been my everything. I’ve always loved singing and performing, but only really started taking songwriting seriously in college. That’s around the time I met my writing partner Eric Nizgretsky and the production duo Noise Club who I still collaborate with to this day.

How did B.Miles come together? Can you tell us a little bit about the band’s dynamic?

Eric and I were in a small music program together in college. We lived a floor apart from each other in the dorms, had every class together and eventually started eating every meal together. We were fast friends! We always knew we wanted to start a music project together, and after a lot of trial and error B.Miles was born. Fast forward to today and it’s still going strong. Our live band has really turned into my New York family: Jackson Firlik on drums and production, Rob Seeley shredding on guitar, Eric on bass and Michael Alexander on keys and synth.

What influences do you draw from when producing music for B.Miles?

With this debut album, I really wanted to touch on all the different sides of what it means to be Brenna. Whether that’s trudging through my corporate day job at 8AM to pay the bills, rehearsing with my bandmates at 8PM, getting off stage after a great show at 1AM, or waking up the next morning to do it all over again. Jackson Firlik and Matias Quarleri from our production team really tapped into what Eric and I were trying to articulate in the songwriting. Musically we drew a lot of influence from Nick Murphy, Karen O, Francois de Roubaix, Shirley Bassey, and Danger Mouse’s “Rome” to name a few. We wanted to keep the sort of cinematic spaghetti western B.Miles sound, while also channeling the themes of angst and insecurity that permeate throughout the record.

What artists are you currently listening to?

I’ve actually been listening to familiar favorites during the pandemic. They’ve been comforting. Weyes Blood’s Titanic Rising and Angel Olsen’s All Mirrors were my favorite albums in 2019, so I’ve continued to listen to them regularly. Courtney Barnett and The Beatles keep me calm, too.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic altered your creative process?

It’s been really difficult, both in terms of the general anxiety in the world and in terms of keeping a disciplined schedule to write and rehearse. Luckily I just adopted a pitbull named Grace who eases my nerves, and Eric is here to push me every day. Those two are looking out for me.

What message would you like to send to your fans right now?

THANK YOU!! I am so humbled by the love B.Miles has received and I can only hope that you can feel even a fraction of the gratitude and love I have for you.

What can we look forward to next from B.Miles?

My debut album In Order of Appearance is out October 16! For now, check out my new song “Wasting Time (New York)” from it.
