BB Book Club: Leah’s December Picks
So. December is my favorite month.
But not because of that attention whore Jesus’s birthday, because MY birthday is on December 13th! Step aside son of Christ, I want the attention for once!
This magical month, soak in the crisp weather, enjoy a chestnut-praline latte from Starbucks, and close your day out - all cozy in your thickest flannel jammies - by reading some of my favorite books below (to celebrate with me, of course)!
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
This one was recommended by a good friend. I believe her exact words were: “I never read it, but I’ve heard great things!” Thank you, Olivia, and I love you! I had never heard of this book before, but once my sweet friend blindly recommended it, my subconscious awakened. I quickly realized it was very popular – practically everyone was posting about it on Instagram - it was like we were all in a secret book club! I felt a unique gravitation to this book that I haven’t felt towards a story in a while – I highly recommend it. I had no idea what to expect when I picked it up, but then I couldn’t put it down. Where the Crawdads Sing is like To Kill a Mockingbird meets The Glass Castle (if Jeanette raised herself and lived in one location instead of jumping from place to place with her family). DM us and PLEASE share your thoughts after this read!! (P.S. Oops I’m overhyping this book, lower your expectations a smidge THEN read.)
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Well, since I brought it up… This is one of my favorite books ever. Does this book seem like a burden to you? Were you forced to read it in high school? If you answered yes to both, please give it a second read! Not only is the story so beautifully delivered, it’s completely timeless. In fact, I reflect back on the different plot lines often. I remember we were assigned to read two or three chapters every other day in 9th grade English class, but once I read up to the trial, I was so captivated that I finished the rest of the book that night. Ok, I know I’m a freak (I’m holding onto “Jem” as a middle name for a nonexistent child), but c’mon, there’s a reason everyone is forced to read this book. I will forever be annoyed that Go Set A Watchman was released, a sequel that Harper Lee didn’t release while she was alive. (Why would we release it on her behalf? Clearly, she didn’t want to be read!) A part of me will always wish I didn’t read GSAW since it shattered a lot of what I loved about TKAM - I digress. I love this book and I love Gregory Peck as a sexy Atticus Finch in the movie.
CHECK LIST:
Order a chestnut-praline latte because “tis the season!”
Reread TKAM – it’s better than you remember!!
Um, wish me a happy birthday?!?
