BB Book Club: Leah’s March Picks

**

Hi everyone!

Bearing in mind the many hateful events within the last year — but at this moment specifically, the hate crime committed against Asian-Americans in Atlanta — we found it important to note that we condemn the actions of these terrorizing parties and stand by the AAPI community. The end of our post includes ways to support our communities, but as always, we encourage you to do your part in staying informed and educated about what’s going on, keeping in mind our country’s history of racism toward the AAPI community.

Please enjoy this month’s book club, reflect a lot, and #STOPAAPIHATE !!!

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

W. O. W. What a powerful story. This novel takes place right before Germany occupies France, all the way through the end of World War II. The gut-wrenching story switches between the perspectives of two French sisters and their very different, but equally intense, experiences during the war. I appreciate how these contrasting sisters interpret the tragedy at hand, and how that ultimately pushes them down differing paths. It’s fascinating to observe the growth of both women - who are both strong and influential, but placed in contrasting roles. Although it’s hard not to compare yourself to others, it’s important to remember that your strength and role in this life isn’t any less valuable than another’s. Overall, The Nightingale is a great read with lots of action, and it’s also super well written! Warning: It’s fully a tearjerker, so have your tissue box close!

P.S. There’s a movie version on Hulu, but I haven’t seen it yet. Let us know if you have, and if it’s good, by DMing us on Brain Break's IG

My Squirrel Days by Ellie Kemper

You might know Ellie Kemper from her role on The Office as the adorable Erin, or as the adorable Kimmy in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And now you can know her as the adorable Ellie Kemper in her OWN hilarious memoir! I highly recommend this book as a light and fun read in between some heavier content (i.e., The Nightingale). Ellie shares memories from her childhood, as well as her adolescence, when she got her start in comedy. I especially enjoyed her chapter about being a bridesmaid — while filming Bridesmaids! Oh and of course, her experience auditioning for SNL!! Enjoy this adorable book written by a smart, funny and truly ADORABLE woman!
